Description
The Seacoast Travel Region is characterized
by its picturesque seaport towns of Portsmouth, Hampton
and Seabrook. The area is known for hospitality and
a casual lifestyle. Fourteen Division of Parks and
Recreation facilities lie within the area. There
are historic forts, state beaches and fishing piers,
marinas and even an urban forestry center. Scenic
roads offer bicycling opportunities, golf courses
abound, miles of hiking trails, deep sea fishing
opportunities, ocean cruises to offshore islands,
viewing historic homes and gardens, and browsing
through antique shops, boutiques and factor outlets
are commonplace in the Seacoast Travel Region.
Location
The Seacoast Travel Region lies in the lower
eastern corner of the state along the Maine, North Atlantic
and Massachusetts borders.

Portsmouth
Naval Shipyard was founded by the U.S. Congress on June
12, 1800, as the first of six public shipyards. The Treaty
of Portsmouth, which ended the Russo-Japanese War in
1905, was signed here.
During
World War II, it employed 24,000 workers, who produced
record numbers of submarines. Today the shipyard's
focus is the overhaul of nuclear submarines. The
large, white fortress-like building at the eastern
end of the shipyard (not shown), a naval prison,
was closed in 1974 and remains empty.

The
Rosa Restaurant,
a Portsmouth landmark since 1927, is located in the
Strawbery Banke and Prescott Park neighborhood. The
Rosa is the oldest continuously operating restaurant
in Portsmouth. The neon sign on the front of the building,
the only one in downtown Portsmouth, is as historical
as Portsmouth itself.
Recently,
renovations to its building at 80 State Street have
been completed. Owners Pam and Joe Hunt, who purchased
the business and buildings from The Rosa family,
have spent 10 years restoring and renovating the
259 seat restaurant. The Rosa features its own parking
lot, five dining rooms (four of them nonsmoking,
three are private with working fireplaces), original
tin ceilings and an open beam ceiling in the bar/lounge
area.
